Meaning of star lines

When looking at the sky, the stars are star shaped such that they have many lines going out in many directions. I understand that this is due to diffraction and imperfection of the eye, but do the directions of those line also contain information about the star (apart from its location in the sky)?
Or will two stars that are close to each other will have the same direction for their line, regardless on their internal properties? (As I use the same eyes, and looking in the same direction).
I couldn’t find bright enough stars that are close to each such that I can see the directions of their lines and check that
